Website Statistics Without Google Analytics — and Without a Cookie Banner

Privacy friendly alternatives deliver less data, but the data you actually need. Which numbers matter and how to get by without consent at all.

Website Statistics Without Google Analytics — and Without a Cookie Banner

Most small websites use Google Analytics because it is free and everyone uses it. The price is a cookie banner nobody wants to see and a tool that delivers ninety percent more data than is ever looked at.

Why the banner is there in the first place

Analytics sets cookies and processes personal data. That requires active consent before the script loads. Anyone who declines does not appear in the statistics. The result is an incomplete data set and an extra hurdle right at the first visit.

A banner that forty percent decline produces statistics that are forty percent wrong.

What the alternatives do differently

Cookie free tools count visits without recognising people across multiple sessions. Without cookies and without personal data, the consent requirement usually falls away. The banner disappears and all visitors are counted.

Well known options are Plausible, Fathom and Matomo. Matomo can also run on your own server, which keeps the data entirely with you.

What you lose

Recognising individual visitors over weeks, very detailed audience profiles, and tight integration with advertising accounts. For an online shop with a large ad budget that can matter. For most small business websites it is data that never led to a decision.

Which numbers actually count

  • Which pages get opened and which practically never.
  • Where visitors come from — search, referral, social, direct.
  • Where they leave, especially on the path to the form.
  • How many enquiries come out of it. The only number that counts in the end.

Every privacy friendly tool delivers these four.

The side effect

Without a banner the visit starts without a hurdle. The page loads faster because a large script disappears, and the homepage looks tidier.

If you are considering switching, we are happy to look at which numbers you actually use and what has to stay.
