Starting an Online Shop — What to Settle Before the Technology
The shop software is rarely the problem. These questions about shipping, returns and payment methods decide whether the shop pays off in the end.

Most conversations about a new online shop start with the question of which system is best. That's rarely the question a shop later fails on.
What should be settled first
How does the product reach the customer? Shipping costs, packaging, weight brackets, international delivery. These numbers decide your margin, and they're hard to correct later without annoying customers.
What happens with returns? Online retail comes with a statutory right of withdrawal. If you haven't thought about who processes returns and what happens to opened goods, you have a daily operations problem later.
Which payment methods do you offer? Every additional method costs fees, but missing methods cost orders. In Germany many purchases are abandoned when invoice payment or PayPal is missing.
A shop rarely fails on the software. It fails on shipping costs nobody calculated.
The technology comes after that
Once those points are settled, the system question mostly answers itself. Twenty products without variants place different demands than a thousand items with sizes, colours and stock levels.
What's needed in every case: legally required information, a working search, a short checkout, and a view that works on a phone. Most orders today come from mobile.
A realistic start
Start small with the products that reliably sell. Expand once the processes run smoothly. A shop with thirty well maintained items works better than one with three hundred where half are outdated.
