Getting Cited in AI Answers — What Is Actually Changing

Google now answers more and more searches itself. What that means for small businesses and how to structure content so it gets quoted.

Getting Cited in AI Answers — What Is Actually Changing

For a while now Google has been answering many searches directly at the top of the page, summarised from several sources. The user gets their answer without opening a single website. For small businesses that shifts the decisive question: it is no longer only about ranking first, it is about appearing in that summary at all.

What changes in practice

For searches that show such a summary, clicks on the classic results drop noticeably. At the same time a new kind of visibility appears: whoever is named as a source shows up by name, before the results list even begins.

The question is no longer only whether you rank. It is whether your sentence is phrased well enough to be quoted.

How to tell whether your content is quotable

  • Is the answer at the start? A paragraph that takes four sentences to get to the point will not be quoted. The answer belongs in the first two.
  • Is the question asked literally? Subheadings containing exactly the question someone types are far easier to match than creative phrasings.
  • Are there concrete details? Numbers, deadlines, price ranges and the names of procedures can be quoted. Adjectives cannot.
  • Is it clear who is writing? An imprint, a real address and an author connected to the subject are signals that play a role in source selection.

What does not suddenly become unimportant

Technical fundamentals remain the precondition. A page that loads slowly, stumbles on mobile or is not indexed at all will not be quoted either. The new part sits on top, it replaces nothing.

The simplest place to start

Take the five questions customers ask you most often and answer each one in three or four clear sentences on your website. No marketing preamble. That works for people, for classic search and for the summaries at the same time.
