Google Ads or SEO — The Question Is Framed Wrong

One works instantly and stops instantly, the other takes time and stays. When each route makes sense and why most people start in the wrong order.

Google Ads or SEO — The Question Is Framed Wrong

The question is usually posed as either or. In reality the two solve different problems, and which one you currently have decides the answer.

The central difference

Paid ads are a switch. You pay, you appear. You stop paying, you disappear the same day. Search optimisation is a build. It takes months to work, but then it stays, even without ongoing budget.

Ads are rent. Search optimisation is ownership. Both are legitimate, but you should know which one you are currently paying for.

When ads are the right choice

  • You are starting out and need enquiries now, not in six months.
  • You have a time limited offer, an opening or a season.
  • You want to test which wording and which offer actually pulls, before putting months into content.
  • Your market is too competitive to rank organically in the short term.

When search optimisation gives more

  • You work locally. A well maintained business profile and good local pages beat almost any small ad budget.
  • Your service is searched for permanently. Answering the same questions year after year builds something that does not expire.
  • Your budget is tight. Paying continuously for visibility that ends immediately is the more expensive route for small budgets.

The mistake in the order

Many start with ads before the destination page even works. Paid traffic then gets sent to a page that does not convince, and the conclusion becomes that ads do not work. In fact the page does not work, and the ad merely made it visible.

The sensible order is: first the page where enquiries happen, then ads to test, then build organic visibility around whatever proved itself in the test.
