Core Web Vitals — The Three Numbers Google Actually Measures

Loading, responsiveness and stability in plain words. What the three values mean, which thresholds apply, and what you can fix without a developer.

Core Web Vitals — The Three Numbers Google Actually Measures

Core Web Vitals sounds like a topic for developers. Behind it sit three fairly everyday questions: how long until I see something? Does the page react when I tap? And does the content jump around while loading?

The three values in plain words

LCP, the largest element. This measures when the largest visible area has finished loading, usually the header image or the headline. Under 2.5 seconds counts as good.

INP, the response to input. This measures how quickly the page reacts to clicks and typing. Under 200 milliseconds counts as good.

CLS, the layout shifts. This measures how much content still moves while loading. Everyone knows the feeling: you go to tap a link, an image loads at that moment, and the link slides away.

Most bad scores are not caused by complicated technology. They are caused by one oversized image at the top.

Why this is more than a ranking question

These values were not invented to annoy website owners. They describe how a page feels. A page that stays blank for three seconds and then jumps loses visitors regardless of what Google thinks. The ranking effect is the smaller part, the visitors leaving is the larger one.

What you can improve without a developer

  • Shrink the header image. A photo 4000 pixels wide inside a 1200 pixel area is pure load time with nothing in return.
  • Set fixed dimensions for images. That prevents the jumping while things load.
  • Remove unnecessary extensions. Every extra script costs response time, even when it does nothing visible.
  • Serve fonts yourself. External fonts cost an additional connection before any text appears at all.

How to see your own numbers

Google Search Console has a dedicated section that shows real visitor data, not just a lab simulation. That is the number that counts.

If you like, we will measure your homepage once and tell you which of the three points is costing you most.
