Business Directories — The Underrated Part of Local Visibility

Why identical listings across several portals do more than another blog post, which directories are worth it, and which you can skip.

Business Directories — The Underrated Part of Local Visibility

When local visibility is not working, people usually start thinking about content. Often the cause lies elsewhere: your business appears in various directories with different details, and none of them is completely correct.

Why the listings count at all

Search engines cross check your details across many sources. Name, address and phone number have to be identical everywhere. If Google finds three versions of your address, confidence in all three drops. If it finds the same one everywhere, the detail is treated as confirmed.

The old phone number still sitting in four portals costs you more visibility than a missing blog post.

Which directories are worth it

  • Google Business Profile. More important than everything else combined, and free.
  • Apple Maps. Used by every iPhone and completely overlooked by many businesses.
  • Bing Places. Small, but the basis for several AI assistants.
  • The directory of your chamber or trade association. A credible source, often with a link to your website.
  • One or two large portals in your sector. Not twenty.

What you can skip

Offers promising a listing in "300 directories". Most of those are sites nobody visits and whose links carry no value. Ten correct listings beat three hundred automated ones.

The work behind it

Decide once how your details are written: company name with or without legal form, street spelled out or abbreviated, phone number in which format. Then enter exactly that version everywhere. The value comes from sameness, not from quantity.

What should happen regularly afterwards

Go through the listings once a year. Otherwise moves, new numbers and changed opening hours end up in one place only, and the rest contradicts them.

If you would like to know where your business currently appears with wrong data, we are happy to check and send you the list.
